New York Institute of Philosophy

The New York Institute of Philosophy's mission is two-fold. First, it seeks to make possible concentrated and sustained focus on particular research projects, often over a multi-year period. The topics that will be chosen for such projects are likely to include not only topics of traditional philosophical interest, but also some that are of central importance to ordinary life and public policy. Second, the Institute seeks to ensure that important work in philosophy is available not only to a narrow circle of insiders but also, when appropriate, to a more general public.

One large multi-year project began in academic year 2006-7. Funded by the Mellon Foundation, it focuses on the relations between Science and Religion. A second multi-year project, on the Nature, Limits and Significance of Disagreement, began in academic year 2007-8.

Professor Paul Boghossian of the NYU Department of Philosophy is the Director of the NYIP, and is also chair of the Project on the Nature, Limits and Significance of Disagreement. The other members of the NYIP Steering Committee are Professors Paul Horwich, Kit Fine and David Velleman.

The Project on Science and Religion is chaired by Professor Thomas Nagel. The other permanent members of the Project are Professors Paul Boghossian, Matt Evans, Don Garrett, Philip Kitcher, H. Allen Orr, Alvin Plantinga, John Richardson, Elliott Sober, Michael Strevens and Roger White. The current Graduate Fellows of the Project are Karl Schafer and Jeff Sebo, and the past Graduate Fellows of the Project are Matthew Kotzen, Anna-Sara Malmgren, and Ryan Preston.

In addition to the Director and the Steering Committee, the permanent members of the Project on the Nature, Limits and Significance of Disagreement are Professors Cian Dorr, Hartry Field, John MacFarlane, Jim Pryor, Gideon Rosen, Stephen Schiffer and Crispin Wright. The current Graduate Fellows of the Project are Sinan Dogramaci and Matthew Kotzen.
