MATTHEW SELIGMAN is a fourth-year Ph.D. student. He graduated from
Stanford University in 2002, where he majored in Mathematics and in
Philosophy. He also received an MA in Philosophy at Stanford. Before
coming to NYU, he spent a year in the Ph.D. program at the University
of California at Berkeley.
Matthew's philosophical interests lie in metaphysics, philosophy of
mind, ethics, and political philosophy. He is most interested in the
intersection of these fields, including metaethics, moral psychology,
practical reason, and the philosophy of action. Recently these
questions have led him to a substantive interest in the law, which he
will pursue as a student at Stanford Law School.
He is writing a dissertation in metaethics, on the error theory of
morality and the representational character of moral experience.
Matthew was born and raised in Roslyn, New York. While living in
California he enjoyed rock and ice climbing, and more recently alpine
mountaineering. He tries to travel overseas whenever he can. In his
spare time he plays guitar and argues about politics. He lives in the
East Village.
Matthew has a paper forthcoming in Philosophy and Public
Affairs, titled "Luck, Leverage, and Equality: A Bargaining Problem
for Luck Egalitarians."
